Around one in three Filipinos live below the poverty line. WLS International is an volunteer organization that helps to make a difference in the lives of poor children in Cebu by organizing community projects for children in poor areas and for children living in the dumpsite. In the projects classes are organised for the children to improve their education. Also food distribution is done to feed the children.
Volunteering in the Philippines allows international volunteers to take part in meaningful community projects, while discovering the people and sights of the Philippines.
Why Volunteer in the Philippines?
The Philippines is a picturesque travel destination in Southeast Asia but there is also very much a developing country. It has its fair share of economic and social problems. It is one of the most populous countries in the world, and there is a definite lack in basic resources to provide for the people and the children. Unfortunately many people are still without adequate basic necessities such as food, education, healthcare and housing.
It is very much a developing nation that is in need of lots of help and so international volunteers can make a valuable contribution by volunteering in this wonderful country.
Besides providing valuable help and assistance to the community projects and the children in Cebu in the Philippines, volunteers gain personal experience and valuable new skills while joining the program, by gaining a new understanding and perspective of the world, developing new friendships with local people and international volunteers.
One project is at a dumpsite for children living at the dumpsite. There volunteers are supporting the education of poor children from the surrounding areas. The poverty experienced in this area is not just a lack of money but also the inability to access basic needs such as food as well as basic education for all of its children. Many of these children are too poor to go to school so the education they received form the projects is the only education they receive. The projects also provides a free meals for these children.
Looking for plastics and other recyclable items at the city dump is daily life for many of these children. Many of these children are also malnourished. The children work at the dumpsite to supplement their family’s income so they can survive. The work is hard and dangerous, and the stench of decaying material permeates the area. Many of these children have almost nothing and they have to live at the dumpsite where the family collect rubbish in order to make a living.
A proper meal and eduction is often not available for these children. Many of these kids can not go to school because their parents can not afford to send them to school.
Aims and Objectives
Firstly the community projects aim to create better future prospects for under-developed children from poor areas. Helping local children who did not have a change to study the English language with foreign teachers to improve their English language skills and in this way increasing the chances for these children in their future educational and working career.
Secondly, as some of these poor children do not get proper nutrition, the projects also does food distribution for these children. For some children this will be the only proper meal they will have during the day.
