The 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season kicks off Thursday through Sunday, February 5th through 8th with the Circle K NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in California, and one of the biggest changes in the Funny Car division is the departure of Ford’s blue oval and the reappearance of Chevrolet’s bow tie.
16-time Funny Car champ John Force and his John Force Racing stable, including daughter Courtney and son-in-law Robert Hight, bring the bow tie back to the Funny Car division after Ford announced its intentions to leave the series at the end of the 2014 season. The three JFR team cars drove away with 12 Wallys last season.
Ford’s decision also affected Tasca Racing and driver Bob Tasca III, who has not yet stated his plans for 2015.
As always in Funny Car, JFR’s main rivalry will be with Don Schumacher Racing, and the rivalry takes on a new twist as long-time JFR associates Jimmy Prock and John Medlen join the team of 2012 Funny Car champ Jack Beckman, who is winless in the last two seasons. Also returning to DSR’s Funny Car stable: 2014 champ Matt Hagan, Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr. Hagan, Capps and Johnson Jr. tallied seven wins in the 2014 season.
The Kalitta Motorsports team of Del Worsham and Alexis DeJoria returns to the track in 2015 after a successful 2014 campaign, with Worsham winning once and DeJoria three times. The Pedregon brothers, Cruz and Tony, also return for the 2015 season, as does third-year driver Chad Head. Other drivers on the entry list for Pomona in February include Jeff Arend, Bob Bode Jr. and Gary Densham.
