Foods That Can Increase Acid Reflux

The stomach of a human being is between the esophagus and intestines. After food is chewed and swallowed, it travels to the stomach through the tube with muscular rigidity through which food is propelled into the stomach by a process called peristalsis. The stomach helps digest food by the use of hydrochloric acid, pepsin and bile juices that are the secretions of the gastric glands and liver.


The lower esophageal sphincter muscle is very hard. It will only open to let the food that you eat into the stomach and then closes. Sometimes the lower esophageal sphincter is weakened, relax and not functioning properly, enabling the movement of stomach juices into the esophagus causing a burning sensation in the chest and a painful upset stomach area, commonly known as heartburn.


The acid reflux disease, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), Osophageal gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux disease refers to the effects of acid food that goes from the stomach into the esophagus.


There are many foods that when eaten without checks and balances can cause acid reflux disease. These foods include, but are not limited to, chocolate and sweets made with artificial colors and flavors. These foods require excess acidic gastric juices and long periods of time to decompose. The pressure created by the gastric juices into the esophagus over time can cause it to open, forcing the mixing of food and bile in the tube.


Coffee, caffeinated drinks and alcoholic beverages act as a relaxant. When these drinks are taken in excess, they have the effect of increasing the gastric juices in the stomach, effectively increasing the pressure on the walls of the stomach, forcing stomach juices to move in the opposite direction. The situation becomes much worse if the esophageal sphincter is weaker than normal.


Fruit juices, chiles, fatty foods, fried foods, onions and citrus fruits are very difficult to digest. Often the strength of the glad to produce excess stomach acid and the liver to produce more bile to digest the food eaten. The best way to reduce the incidence of acid reflux is to avoid excessive consumption of foods that help to accumulation of gastric acid and bile.The stomach of a human being is between the esophagus and intestines.
