The question shouldn’t be are there any foods that cause heartburn rather it should be what combinations of foods cause heartburn or acid reflux. Sometimes doctors or nutritionists find it too easy to generalise foods when listing what we should and shouldn’t eat to aid our particular digestive problem. In my experience, it can be very depressing and demoralising to hear them say eat low fibre diets or high fibre diets or stay away from spicy foods.
Basically they are telling you to stop eating all of your favourite foods and start eating bland, boring, tasteless food for the rest of your life. It can be very inconsiderate of them to expect us to stick to such boring diets especially as most of the time they have little or no effect in helping our heartburn.
The truth is, if we understand the workings of our digestive system better it is possible to completely eliminate our heartburn while still being able to eat most of our favourite foods as long as we put some more thought into our meals and avoid combining certain foods which cause of digestive system to react badly and create excess stomach acid.
What I’ve found is that our digestive system basically digests food in 3 different ways depending on the type of food. Foods require either an acid, an alkaline or a neutral digestive process to allow them to pass through us with no problems or issues.
Problems occur when we combine foods and one needs an acidic digestive process and the other needs alkaline digestive enzymes. What happens is that the 2 processes neutralise each other and little or no digestion takes place at all.
This can result is the food sitting in our stomachs sometimes for hours which can create excess stomach acids and eventually result in painful heartburn which can keep us awake at night and generally cause a lot of discomfort.
There aren’t necessarily many foods that cause heartburn on their own. The secret is not simply about eating the right foods but about eating them in the right combinations that allow your body to digest the food properly and reduce the amount of acid building up.
