Harrogate, which is also known as Harrogate Spa, is a town that lives up to its (other) name. Located in North Yorkshire, Harrogate Spa is one of the UK’s premier spa towns and is visited by many tourists looking for rest and relaxation – and with good reason. The town is packed with various opportunities for rejuvenation, but what makes it so unique is the fact that so many of its more opulent features also happen to be a little on the ancient side.

Harrogate has been considered a spa town for several hundred years. Ever since the Tewitt Well was discovered to contain gorgeous and beneficial mineral spring water in 1571, Harrogate’s spa industry has grown. When two hundred acres of land surrounding the town was reserved as public commons, the town’s appeal rose further yet, and today this land is still used for walking, hiking, picnicking, flying kites and all kinds of other relaxing diversions.

Harrogate is also home of a Turkish bath, where visitors can go to enjoy the properties of water as applied to health and well being, thus furthering Harrogate’s reputation. It would appear that the discovery of that mineral spring water down the well in the sixteenth century really did go a long way towards shaping Harrogate’s future and the town it would turn out to be!

When you’re not enjoying all of the restful and relaxing things you can do around Harrogate, there’s plenty more to hold your interest – such as the town’s history, for example. Harrogate, like many spots in Britain, was met by the Vikings and the Romans and even hid some treasure left behind by the former: Harrogate Hoard was discovered in 2007 and contained over 500 coins from all around the world. The Hoard now resides at the British Museum, which recognises it as one of the most important hauls of its kind in the last one hundred and fifty years.

There’s also plenty of shopping opportunities to be had – naturally – and an abundance of restaurants where you can enjoy delicious fare of all kinds. To keep up with Harrogate’s image as a town of enjoyment, you can also expect plenty of opportunities to go to the theatre, see shows or simply enjoy a lovely walk through a nice-looking town. One thing’s for sure though – after a day of spa treatments and relaxation, you’re sure to get to sleep the moment your head hits your pillow in Harrogate hotels.
